moments in business when you realize the stakes are higher than just making a sale or landing a new client. These are the moments when you’re not just building a company; you’re building a legacy. For me, with Comet Lighting, one of those moments came when we started talking about trademarks. It’s not the most glamorous topic, I’ll admit, but it’s absolutely critical. You can have the best product, the most dedicated team, and a crystal-clear vision, but if you don’t protect your brand, you’re building on sand.

In this week’s “Launch: Building the Comet Brand” episode, we pulled back the curtain on our trademark strategy. The question wasn’t if we should trademark, but how. Should we go with one broad application, or three more specific ones? It might sound like a minor detail, but these are the decisions that can either solidify your future or leave you vulnerable. Here’s what we learned, and what I hope you can take away for your own journey:

Thanks for reading! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work.

1. Don’t Skimp on Brand Protection – It’s an Investment, Not an Expense

When you’re starting out, every dollar counts. It’s tempting to cut corners, especially on things that don’t immediately generate revenue. Legal fees, intellectual property protection – these often feel like overhead. But I’ve learned that protecting your brand name, your logo, your unique identity, is one of the most vital investments you can make. Imagine pouring years of effort, marketing dollars, and personal sacrifice into building something, only for a competitor to come along and use your name or a confusingly similar one. The cost of defending your brand after an infringement is exponentially higher than proactively protecting it. Think of it as an insurance policy for your future success. God has given us talents and opportunities; it’s our responsibility to be good stewards of them, and that includes safeguarding the brand He’s allowed us to build.

2. Specificity Matters: One Application vs. Three

Our legal counsel laid it out clearly: while one broad application might seem simpler or cheaper upfront, it often leaves gaps. We discussed applying for three separate trademarks: one for “Comet Lighting” as a service mark for installation, another for our product line (the actual lights), and a third for our unique logo. Why? Because each protects a different aspect of our business. A service mark protects the service we provide (installing lights), a product mark protects the goods we sell (the lights themselves), and a logo mark protects our visual identity. This layered approach ensures comprehensive protection across all facets of our brand. It’s about thinking through every angle, anticipating potential issues, and building a fortress around your intellectual property.

3. The Long Game: Building a Brand for Generations

This entire “Launch” series isn’t just about starting a business; it’s about building a brand that can endure. When we talk about trademarks, we’re not just talking about today or next year. We’re talking about 10, 20, 50 years down the line. We’re talking about the legacy we’re creating for our families, our team, and our community. A strong, protected brand is an asset that appreciates over time, providing value, recognition, and trust. It’s a testament to the hard work and faith that went into its creation. Every decision, from the smallest operational detail to the most complex legal strategy, needs to be made with this long-term vision in mind. We’re not just making money; we’re making a mark.

4. Don’t Go It Alone: Seek Expert Counsel

I’m a big believer in learning and doing things yourself when you can. But there are certain areas where expert counsel isn’t just helpful, it’s essential. Trademark law is one of them. We could have tried to navigate the USPTO website ourselves, but the nuances, the classifications, and the potential pitfalls are immense. Bringing in a seasoned attorney who specializes in intellectual property was non-negotiable. They understand the landscape, they know the precedents, and they can guide you to make the most effective decisions. As entrepreneurs, we wear many hats, but knowing when to delegate to a specialist is a sign of strength, not weakness. It frees us up to focus on what we do best, while ensuring critical areas are handled by the best.

Building Comet Lighting has been a journey of faith, hard work, and continuous learning. There are always challenges, always new decisions to make, and always moments when you have to trust that you’re being led in the right direction. Protecting our brand through a robust trademark strategy is just another step in that journey, ensuring that the light we’re building will shine brightly for years to come.

If you’re building your own brand or thinking about it, I encourage you to watch this week’s episode, “Trademark Strategy: One Application or Three?” on the “Launch: Building the Comet Brand” YouTube series. For me, one of those moments came when I decided to take our entire Comet Lighting team – every single one of them – to the biggest lighting event in America. We’re talking about a significant investment in time, travel, and resources for a young brand still finding its footing. But as I share in the latest “Launch: Building the Comet Brand” episode, it was an investment that has already paid dividends in ways I couldn’t have fully predicted.

It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind, focusing on the next sale, the next installation. But true growth, the kind that builds a lasting legacy, requires stepping back and pouring into the people who make it all happen. This trip wasn’t just about seeing new products; it was about vision, connection, and igniting a shared passion. It was about showing our team that we believe in them, and that their growth is integral to Comet’s journey.

## Key Takeaways from Our Industry Immersion

### 1. Vision Casting Through Shared Experience

When I talk about vision, I often think about how God gives us glimpses of what’s possible, then asks us to step out in faith. Bringing the team to this event wasn’t just about me sharing *my* vision for Comet; it was about them *seeing* the industry’s future, *feeling* the energy, and *understanding* the scale of what we’re a part of. They walked the aisles, saw the latest innovations, and connected with other professionals. This shared experience solidified our collective purpose. It’s one thing for me to tell them where we’re going; it’s another for them to witness the vastness of the landscape we’re navigating and see our place within it. It gave them a tangible understanding of the quality and innovation we aspire to, and the standard we aim to set.

### 2. The Power of External Validation and Internal Pride

As entrepreneurs, we often live in our own bubble, convinced of our product’s quality and our brand’s potential. But there’s immense power in external validation. At this event, our team saw Comet Lighting products displayed alongside industry giants. They heard feedback from other professionals, and they felt a surge of pride in what we’re building. This isn’t about ego; it’s about affirmation. It reinforces their belief in the work they do every day. When your team feels that pride, when they see their efforts recognized on a larger stage, it fuels their commitment and passion in ways no internal pep talk ever could.

### 3. Fostering a Culture of Continuous Learning and Innovation

The home service industry is constantly evolving. If you’re not learning, you’re falling behind. This trip was a masterclass in continuous improvement. Our team engaged with manufacturers, learned about new techniques, and saw firsthand how technology is shaping the future of lighting. This wasn’t just about technical skills; it was about cultivating a mindset of curiosity and innovation. When your team sees new possibilities, they bring that energy back to their daily work, constantly looking for better ways to serve our customers and elevate the Comet experience. It reminds us that our calling is not just to install lights, but to create extraordinary experiences and solutions.

### 4. Deepening Team Bonds Beyond the Job Site

Beyond the business lessons, there was an invaluable human element to this trip. Spending days together, sharing meals, and navigating a new city forged deeper connections within our team. We saw each other in a different light, literally and figuratively. These shared experiences outside the typical work environment build camaraderie, trust, and a stronger sense of family within the company. And in a faith-driven business, that sense of family, of truly caring for one another, is paramount. It’s the foundation upon which everything else is built.

## The Unseen Returns of Investing in Your People

Was it a big expense? Absolutely. Did it stretch us? You bet. But I believe with all my heart that investing in your people is one of the most strategic decisions you can make. It’s not just about what they learn; it’s about how they feel valued, how their vision expands, and how their commitment deepens. It’s about building a brand that’s not just about products, but about purpose, people, and a shared journey towards excellence.

If you’re building a business, especially in home services, don’t underestimate the power of investing in experiences for your team. It might seem like a luxury, but I see it as a necessity for long-term growth and a vibrant company culture. It’s about honoring the people God has entrusted to your care and equipping them to fulfill their potential.

Watch the full episode, “We Took Our Entire Team to the Biggest Lighting Event in America,” on the “Launch: Building the Comet Brand” YouTube channel to see the trip unfold and hear more of our insights. You wash one house, roll up your hoses, load the truck, drive across town, unload, wash another house, roll up again, and repeat. You burn fuel, you burn time, and your technicians spend half their day moving equipment instead of making money. I ran that version of this business for years. It works — but it is not efficient, and inefficiency is the quiet killer of margin in the home service industry.

Thanks for reading! It is a neighborhood-level campaign that combines route density, an HOA partnership, a performance pay structure, a professional landing page, and a non-refundable deposit system to create a single day of work that is more profitable, more efficient, and more valuable to the community than anything we could do chasing one-off jobs across a 30-mile radius.

This is the full playbook. I am sharing real numbers. Take what works for your market and build on it.

The Core Idea: Stop Chasing Jobs. Start Owning Neighborhoods.

The premise is simple. Instead of marketing to individual homeowners one at a time, you identify a neighborhood where you already have a foothold — or one you want to penetrate — and you propose a community event. One day. One crew. Every participating home on the same street or in the same subdivision, back to back, with no mobilization time between stops.

The efficiency gain is not marginal. When your crew does not have to roll up hoses, load the truck, drive to the next job, and set up again, you can realistically complete two to three times the number of jobs in a single day compared to a scattered route. That means more revenue per crew hour, lower fuel costs, and — critically — more earning opportunity for your technicians under a performance pay model.

The community wins because they receive pricing that reflects your actual cost savings. You are not discounting out of desperation. You are passing on a genuine efficiency gain to the homeowner, and that is a story worth telling.

The HOA Partnership: Making Them the Hero

Here is the piece that most operators miss, and it is the most important part of the model.

You do not market this event yourself. You partner with the HOA and let them deliver the message to their community.

When the HOA sends an email to their contact list saying, “We have partnered with Clean Image Pressure Washing to bring a community wash day exclusively to our residents at up to 49% off regular pricing,” the homeowner does not see a vendor trying to sell them something. They see their HOA going out of their way to deliver value. The HOA looks like heroes. The trust is already built before the homeowner ever reads a single word about your company.

We back this up with physical flyers delivered to every mailbox in the community. The flyer includes a QR code that takes residents directly to a custom landing page built specifically for that neighborhood — not a generic website, not a contact form, but a professional registration page that shows them exactly what services are available, what the community pricing is, and what the process looks like from registration to wash day.

This combination — HOA email blast plus physical flyer with QR code — creates multiple touchpoints and gives residents a clear, frictionless path to sign up.

The Landing Page: Professional, Specific, and Built to Convert

One of the upgrades I made to this model recently was building a dedicated landing page for each community campaign rather than directing people to our main website. The difference in conversion is significant.

The page for our current Hammock Pointe campaign shows the community name prominently, displays the exact community pricing with the regular price crossed out, lists the services available, and walks residents through the three-step process: register, receive a deposit request from Clean Image, and get your home washed on the scheduled day.

Here is what the hero section looks like:

<picture><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!gZB1!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F72a7f463-c0fc-476b-a6e9-aaeddae41a2b_894x768.webp" width="894" height="768" data-attrs="{"src":"https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/72a7f463-c0fc-476b-a6e9-aaeddae41a2b_894x768.webp","srcNoWatermark":null,"fullscreen":null,"imageSize":null,"height":768,"width":894,"resizeWidth":null,"bytes":null,"alt":"Community Wash Day Landing Page — regular combined price.

Now here is the business math. Hammock Pointe has 30 homes. My realistic target is 10 to 15 sign-ups. A three-man crew can complete all 15 in a single day with no mobilization time between stops. At an average ticket of $350 per home across the mix of services, 15 homes generates roughly $5,250 in revenue in one day from one neighborhood.

Compare that to a scattered day where the same crew might complete 6 to 8 jobs across a wide geographic area, spending 20 to 30 minutes driving between each one. The community wash day is not just more efficient — it is a fundamentally different category of day.

And that is before we talk about the deposit. At 30% of the total, a $350 average ticket means roughly $105 collected per home before we ever show up. On 15 homes, that is over $1,500 in collected deposits that confirm the schedule and protect us from last-minute cancellations.

The Performance Pay Model: Why Your Technicians Will Love This Day

I run what I call a Performance Pay Model for my technicians. Rather than a flat hourly wage, techs earn a percentage of each job they complete, calculated proportionally based on the time they spend on that job relative to other lead techs. The more efficiently they work, the more they earn per hour.

On top of their base percentage, technicians earn weekly bonuses for:

•Five-star reviews they generate

•Efficiency rates (jobs completed per hour of active work time)

•Behavioral bonuses tied to professionalism and customer interaction standards

•Weekly targets set by our staff — goals that are announced at the start of each week and incentivized with cash bonuses

The result is a crew that is genuinely motivated to work efficiently, treat customers well, and generate reviews — because every one of those behaviors directly increases their paycheck.

A community wash day is one of the best days of the year for a technician under this model. They are working continuously with no downtime between stops. They are generating multiple reviews in a single neighborhood. They are hitting efficiency targets that trigger bonuses. And as I will explain in the next section, they have a natural opportunity to earn 10% commission on additional services they sell while on-site.

The more money my technicians make, the more money I make. And the more money we both make, the more room we have to offer genuine discounts to the communities we serve. This is not a zero-sum game.

The Upsell Opportunity: The Wash Day Is a Paid Lead Generation Event

Here is the piece of this model that most operators do not fully account for when they run the numbers.

When your technician is on-site washing a home, they are not just washing a home. They are standing in front of a homeowner who already said yes to you, who is watching your crew work, and who is in a receptive mindset. That is one of the most valuable sales environments that exists in the home service industry, and it costs you nothing extra to be there.

Clean Image offers a full range of services beyond pressure washing: gutter guards, Christmas lighting installation, permanent architectural lighting, landscape lighting, and more. Every one of those services can be introduced naturally during a community wash day conversation. A technician who notices clogged gutters while washing a roofline can mention our gutter guard program. A technician finishing a driveway can ask whether the homeowner has thought about permanent holiday lighting for the front of the house.

Our technicians earn a 10% commission on any service they sell while on-site. On a $2,500 permanent lighting installation, that is $250 for a conversation that took three minutes. On a $1,200 gutter guard job, that is $120. Multiply that across 10 to 15 homes in a single neighborhood and the upsell revenue from a community wash day can easily match or exceed the wash revenue itself.

This is why I describe the community wash day as a paid lead generation event. The homeowners are paying us to be there. We are getting paid to wash their homes. And while we are there, we have a warm, trusted, in-person opportunity to introduce them to every other service we offer. The HOA partnership means the trust is already established before we arrive. The quality of the work we do on wash day determines whether that trust deepens into a long-term customer relationship.

The Full Playbook: Step by Step

For any home service operator who wants to run this model, here is the complete process:

Step 1 — Identify the right neighborhood. Look for a community where you already have existing customers, where the homes are similar in size and age (which simplifies pricing), and where there is an active HOA. Existing customer density means you already have social proof in the neighborhood.

Step 2 — Approach the HOA. Contact the HOA board or property manager and present the community wash day concept. Frame it as a benefit you are offering to their community — they get to be the ones who deliver the savings to their residents. Most HOA boards are actively looking for ways to add value to their community. This is an easy yes for them.

Step 3 — Set your community pricing. Calculate pricing that reflects your genuine efficiency gain from route density. You are not discounting out of desperation — you are sharing a real cost savings with the community. Be transparent about this. Homeowners respect honesty.

Step 4 — Build a dedicated landing page. Do not send people to your main website. Build a page that is specific to that community, shows the community pricing with the regular price crossed out, explains the process clearly, and has a registration form. The page should answer every question before the homeowner needs to ask it.

Step 5 — Distribute flyers with QR codes. Have the HOA send an email to their contact list and deliver physical flyers to every mailbox. The flyer should be clean, professional, and include a QR code that goes directly to the landing page. Set a registration deadline — scarcity is real because you can only serve a limited number of homes in one day.

Step 6 — Require a non-refundable deposit. When a resident registers, follow up with a deposit request for 30% of their total service cost. No deposit, no confirmed spot. This protects your schedule and ensures you show up to a full day of committed work.

Step 7 — Execute the day. Arrive with your full crew, work the neighborhood sequentially, and treat every interaction as a sales and relationship-building opportunity. Your technicians should be looking for upsell conversations at every stop.

Step 8 — Follow up. After the wash day, follow up with every customer. Request reviews. Introduce them to your other services if they did not purchase during the event. Add them to your customer database for future campaigns.

The Mindset Shift

I want to close with something that is less tactical and more philosophical, because I think it is the real reason most operators do not run this model.

Most home service business owners are reactive. A job comes in, they go do the job. Another job comes in, they go do that job. They are always responding to demand rather than creating it. The community wash day is a proactive model. You are not waiting for homeowners to call you — you are going to a neighborhood, creating an event, and giving people a compelling reason to say yes right now.

This requires a different kind of confidence. You have to believe that your service is worth organizing a community around. You have to be willing to approach an HOA and propose something. You have to invest in a landing page and flyers before you have a single confirmed customer. You have to set a deadline and hold to it.

But when it works — and it does work — you have created something that a scattered, reactive business model never can: a day where your crew is maximally productive, your customers are thrilled, your HOA partner looks like heroes, and your technicians go home having earned more than they would on any other day of the year.

That is the community wash day. Twenty-four years in the making. Now it is yours.

Trevor is the owner of Clean Image Pressure Washing, serving the Grand Strand area of South Carolina since 2002. data-component-name="ButtonCreateButton">Subscribe now

It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking you have to be the lone wolf, the sole genius behind your venture. Especially in home services, where so many of us started with a truck and a dream, there’s a grit that makes us want to figure it all out ourselves. But I’m here to tell you, from the trenches of building Comet Lighting, that’s a fast track to burnout and missed opportunities. Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do for your business, and for your calling, is to admit what you don’t know and bring in the experts.

That’s exactly what we did in Episode 2 of the “Launch: Building the Comet Brand” series. We brought in some seasoned pros to poke holes, ask tough questions, and ultimately, help us refine our approach. It wasn’t about validating what we already thought; it was about challenging it, strengthening it, and sometimes, completely changing it. Here’s what I took away from that experience, and what I hope you can apply to your own journey.

## Humility Opens Doors to Wisdom

I’ve always believed that true strength comes from recognizing your limitations. When you’re building something from scratch, whether it’s a new service line or an entire brand like Comet, you’re going to encounter blind spots. You’re too close to it, too invested. Bringing in outside experts isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a profound act of humility and strategic foresight. It’s saying, “God has given me a vision, but He’s also placed wise counsel in the world for a reason.” These experts aren’t just giving advice; they’re offering a fresh perspective, informed by years of experience you simply don’t have in that specific area. Their insights can save you months, even years, of trial and error, and more importantly, significant capital.

## The Power of a Critical Eye

When you’re passionate about your product or service, it’s natural to see it through rose-tinted glasses. But experts don’t share your emotional attachment. They come in with a critical, objective eye, and that’s invaluable. They’ll ask the uncomfortable questions: “Who is this *really* for?” “What problem are you *actually* solving?” “Is your message clear, or just clever?” In our case, these questions helped us strip away assumptions and get to the core of what Comet Lighting needed to be. It forced us to articulate our value proposition with precision and clarity, which is foundational for any brand aiming to stand out in a crowded market. Don’t shy away from constructive criticism; embrace it as a refining fire.

## Refining Your Message and Market Fit

One of the biggest takeaways from our expert sessions was the importance of crystal-clear communication and understanding our ideal customer. We thought we knew, but the experts pushed us deeper. They helped us understand that a great product is only half the battle; the other half is effectively communicating its value to the right people. This isn’t just about marketing; it’s about product development, service delivery, and every touchpoint a customer has with your brand. When you understand your market intimately, and can speak directly to their needs and desires, you’re not just selling a service; you’re offering a solution, a transformation. This clarity is a gift, and often, it takes an outside perspective to help you unwrap it.

## The Investment is Worth It

Let’s be real, bringing in experts often means an investment of time and money. For a bootstrapped venture like Comet, every dollar counts. But I’ve learned that some investments are non-negotiable. Investing in expert counsel is like investing in a good foundation for your house; you might not see it, but it’s what holds everything else up. It prevents costly mistakes down the road, accelerates your learning curve, and ultimately, positions you for sustainable growth. Think of it not as an expense, but as an insurance policy for your vision, ensuring that the brand you’re building is resilient, relevant, and ready to make an impact.

Building a business, especially a brand from the ground up, is a journey of continuous learning and adaptation. It’s a calling that requires courage, faith, and the wisdom to know when to lean on others. My prayer for you, as you build your own legacy, is that you’ll have the humility to seek counsel, the discernment to apply it, and the confidence to move forward, knowing you’re not alone in this endeavor. God often works through the wisdom of others to guide our steps.

If you’re building something new, or even just refining an existing business, I highly encourage you to watch Episode 2 of “Launch: Building the Comet Brand.” See firsthand how we navigated these conversations and what it looked like to open ourselves up to expert feedback. Leave a comment there or here and let me know: what’s one area where you’ve sought outside expertise, and what was the biggest lesson you learned?

Full episode here

Welcome to Launch: Building the Comet Brand

Man of faith. You're getting a front-row seat to the building of a brand, along with actionable insights you can apply to your own journey.

Here's what we'll be covering:

Leadership in the Trenches: How to build a team that cares as much about the work as you do.

The Home Service Playbook: Tactical advice on scaling, operations, and standing out in a crowded market.

Faith, Family, and Focus: Navigating the tension between growing a business and being present for the people who matter most.

Behind the Scenes of Comet Lighting: Exclusive updates, marketing strategies, and lessons learned from our YouTube series.

The Journey Ahead

Building a business is hard.
